Greetings from Carole Taylor ... your Weekly Update ~ March 11

Millions of Americans have recently jumped on the bandwagon of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (most popular medications are Ozempic, Wegovy, and Trulicity).

Originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, these medications have demonstrated an unexpected benefit in promoting weight loss, mainly through loss of appetite.

It should be noted that he use of these drugs may be accompanied by side effects, some of them severe. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Lost Muscle Mass

While the decrease in appetite supports weight loss, there is a concern that a significant portion of the lost weight could be attributed to loss of muscle mass.

In fact, a 2021 study looking at once-weekly GLP1 agonists reported that ~40% of weight loss was attributed to muscle loss, and just 60% of their weight loss was due to fat loss.

Muscle plays a crucial role in metabolic health and healthy aging, and is essential for overall wellbeing. Individuals using GLP-1 agonists should implement dietary strategies to maximize muscle retention with their limited appetite.

Incorporating a protein-rich diet through meals and protein shakes can play a pivotal role in mitigating this concern and supporting overall muscle health.

"Ozempic Face"

Some GLP-1 users have reported a phenomenon known as “Ozempic face” ~ a term coined to describe changes in facial appearance such as fat loss and a hollowed look.

As the body sheds excess fat, particularly in the face, individuals may notice changes in facial fullness and contour. These changes can give the appearance of accelerated aging with increased lines and wrinkles.

One effective way to limit the impact of Ozempic face is by promoting the body’s own collagen production.

One effective way to limit the impact of Ozempic face is by promoting the body’s own collagen production through proper nutrition. Foods rich in vitamin C, amino acids, and antioxidants as well as supplements, such as Collagen Elixir have been shown to support collagen production.

Lean Muscle Essentials Pack ~ Nutritional Support

Ensuring the best possible nutrition with adequate protein is particularly important, considering these drugs partially work by reducing appetite. If you are going to consume less food, it is essential that the food you do eat is nutritionally dense and complete.

Because of the significantly lower dietary intake, augmenting one’s intake of phytonutrients is another key recommendation.

Lean Muscle Essentials is the perfect companion to assist with maintaining and building lean muscle, boosting metabolism, and optimizing superfood nutrients for enhanced and sustained weight loss results while on GLP-1 or similar medicated weight loss programs.
