Mangosteen: The ‘Queen of the Fruits’

The mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a fruit native to tropical and arid climates, including Southeast Asia countries such as India, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand.

Frequently considered a superfruit due to its exotic nature and reported traditional health benefits, the mangosteen has a soft flesh that resembles a white tangerine.

For centuries, the rind and flesh of the mangosteen has been used as a medicinal agent. Its flesh is mildly acidic with a delicious taste profile described as sweet and sour and resembling a combination of grape and strawberry.

Phytonutrient Rich

Like most fruits and vegetables, the mangosteen contains a wide assortment of plant-based nutrients.

In addition to anthocyanins, flavonoids, and terpenes, mangosteens are also rich in tannins and a family of anti-oxidant phytonutrients known as xanthones.

Xanthones vs Free Radicals

Free radicals are unstable and highly reactive molecules. They may be formed as a by-product of normal metabolism, or through exposure to smoking and air pollutants, UV light from the sun, excess alcohol consumption, certain foods, and many other stressors.

They cause damage by “stealing” electrons from the structures within your cells in a process known as oxidation. Free radicals can damage practically any part of your cells, including proteins, cell membranes, and even your DNA.

Thankfully, antioxidants can shut down free radicals before they can cause serious damage. Our cells naturally produce their own powerful antioxidants, but we also need to consume antioxidant nutrients to keep this system working properly.

Mangosteen is particularly rich in anti-oxidant phytonutrients such as flavonoids, alpha-mangostin, and xanthones.
