Intermittent fasting is not new to Isagenix. In fact, since the company’s founding in 2002, intermittent fasting as Cleanse Days have been integral to the success of the Isagenix System.


Intermittent fasting isn't complicated.

It is simply periods of voluntary abstinence from food - typically one day per week. Instead of strictly counting calories every day, intermittent fasting is all about when and how much you should eat.

Intermittent fasting, taking a periodic break from eating, allows the process of autophagy to be activated naturally.

During autophagy, worn-out or oxidatively damaged proteins and cellular components, such as mitochondria, can be tagged for disposal and broken down into their component parts. Undamaged building blocks like amino acids can be recycled to support cell maintenance and growth.


As a process of cellular cleansing and renewal, autophagy helps to support the health of the heart and the brain and is essential to the long-term maintenance of good health.

Intermittent fasting encourages the body’s ability to switch its fuel source from carbohydrates to fats ~ promoting fat burning and greater metabolic flexibility.

In our bodies, the two main energy sources are carbohydrates (via glucose) and fat (via fatty acids). Generally, after we eat a meal that contains a mix of nutrients, glucose is used for energy and fat is stored in adipose tissue.


Adipose tissue ~ or body fat ~ produces hormones which influence several important functions including glucose and lipid metabolism, blood coagulation, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and steroid hormone modulation.


Excessive adipose tissue can negatively affect health through insulin resistance, abnormal blood lipids, and even increased cardiovascular disease risk.


During a fast day, the body flips from an energy-storing state to an energy-burning state. Your body is now burning through fat to generate most of your energy, causing the fat cells to shrink in size.


As fat cells decrease in size, so too does the amount of hormones produced.


In addition to sustainable weight loss, this reestablishment of normal hormonal function can be immensely beneficial for health ~ including decreasing insulin sensitivity and reducing the molecules that induce inflammation.
