The first discovery of the importance of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids to heart health occurred over 50 years ago.
In 1971 researchers noted a striking contradiction between the high dietary fat intake and low plasma cholesterol, resulting in reduced cardiovascular disease, in the population of Greenland Inuits.
These “heart-healthy” effects were attributed to the unusual type and amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids in fatty fish – long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

Not Just For The Heart
Further research by Nobel Prize winning scientists in the 1980's confirmed and expanded the beneficial effects of Omega-3.
We now know that omega-3 fatty acids, and their metabolites, play a significant role in supporting overall health and wellbeing.

Most American’s Diets are Low
in Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna. Other omega-3 fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid, are found in certain vegetables, vegetable oils, and nuts.
Unfortunately, considerable research indicates that Americans consume an inadequate amount of these essential nutrients.
One study reported that 68% of American adults had long-chain omega-3 serum levels below that associated with their health benefits.

A 2018 12-month randomized, double-blinded study suggested that even those who consume 1 to 2 servings per week of fish rich in omega-3s incorporate these heart-healthy nutrients into their bodies less than those who take supplements of omega-3s daily.
