Greetings from Carole Taylor ... your Weekly Update ~ August 15

In the U.S., the average person consumes more sugar than anywhere else in the world. Daily sugar intake is now up to 126 grams.

How would switching an average person in the U.S. to an Isagenix program affect his or her total sugar intake?

The answer is that a typical consumer using an Isagenix 30-Day System would cut his or her sugar intake by half or more daily, depending on products used and whether the day was a Shake Day or Cleanse Day.

More importantly, the same consumer would also cut total intake of carbohydrates and calories by nearly half - while improving overall nutrition - promoting safe, healthy weight loss while maintaining muscle.

Why Use Sugar At All?

The use of modest amounts of sugar for natural sweetness in Isagenix products often raises questions from health-conscious consumers.

The answer simply comes down to this: it wouldn’t be a complete meal replacement without it.

Sugars are naturally found in many foods that contribute to a healthy diet – fruits, vegetables, dairy, and grains.

Plus, all carbohydrates – whether they come from fruits, vegetables, or grain products like pasta – are all broken down to simple sugars before being absorbed into the body.

The body requires sugar at a steady rate, but we should avoid the copious amounts that spike blood sugar or insulin.

Sugar in Isagenix Products

When you look at ingredient labels of Isagenix products, you’ll probably notice that some of them include small amounts of sugar.

These might occur in different forms or a combination of forms, including dextrose, sucrose, fructose, honey, molasses, and agave syrup ~ the total of which never exceeds the amount of a medium-sized apple.

An entire day’s intake from Isagenix products still contains 16 grams less sugar in comparison to drinking one single serving of cola.

In fact, two IsaLean Shake servings daily provide only about 32 grams of sugar total in about 500 calories. The moderate amount per serving is about as much as you’d find in an orange or apple.

All of IsaLean Shakes and Bars are each evaluated individually in human clinical trials to confirm that they are, indeed, low glycemic.

Fructose

As with any kind of sugar, too much fructose such as in the form of sugary drinks can indeed be harmful to your health.

But as part of a reduced-calorie Isagenix system, fructose is particularly useful. Compared to other sugars, consuming fructose results in a more moderate rise in blood glucose levels.

In controlled amounts as part of a calorie-restricted regimen such as your Isagenix system, fructose serves to help maintain blood sugar control and is burned up as energy - not stored as fat - supporting overall health and weight loss goals.

Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols are often used in sugar-free candies and desserts because they are low-glycemic and provide fewer calories per gram as compared to regular sugar.

Sugar alcohols are naturally found in many kinds of fruits and vegetables and assist in providing sweetness while helping maintain a lower glycemic and caloric profile.

The sugar alcohols also help retain moisture in some Isagenix products to keep them from hardening due to their high content of protein.

Why Not Just Use Stevia?

A common question is why not use solely stevia - a natural sweetener that is produced from the leaves of the stevia plant - for sweetening meal replacements.

The natural leaf extract is already used for providing some sweetness to IsaLean Shake and other Isagenix products. Stevia is not a source of carbohydrates or sugar and provides zero calories.

The answer is that a little sugar is a good thing in any nutritious food or meal replacement.

It’s not only important for appeal coming from its sweetness, but it can help contribute to the balance of carbohydrate for energy and fuel for physical activity.

Should I be concerned about sugar at all in Isagenix products?

There’s really no reason to be afraid of sugar in Isagenix products because it’s used in ways that are strategic and smart.

You end up receiving less total amounts of sugar while still getting just enough to provide sweetness in nutrient-dense (as opposed to energy dense) meals, and to fuel the brain and body systems on Cleanse Days, as well as physical activity every day.
